Illinoisan, Monday, February 7, 1994 Page 5A Deaths Joseph Cotten, star of 'Citizen dead at 89 LOS ANGELES (AP) Joseph Cotten, the polished Virginian actor who became a star with "Citizen Kane" went on to play opposite Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis, Ingrid Bergman and others, died Sunday of pneumonia. He was 88. Cotten died at his suburban Westwood home at 6:30 a.m., with his wife, actress Patricia Medina, bedside, said Cotten's business manHe been ill for several months, ager hand attorney, Hugh Robertson. Robertson said. He had a massive stroke in 1981 and lost his voice entirely.

Speech therapy allowed him to talk again, but his acting career was over. Cotten's smooth, low-key personality made him an ideal leading man for Hollywood's most famous actresses, and his versatility allowed him to play both villains of a and heroes Third He came to films via Orson Welles' Mercury Theater and appeared in Welles' first three movies: "'Citizen Kane," "The Magnificent and "Journey into Fear." Cotten played the cynical reporter to Welles' publisher Charles Foster Kane in the-1941 sensation, "Citizen Kane." When the Mercury Theater broke up, Cotten signed a contract with David O. Selznick, then riding the success of "Gone with the Wind." Cotten's other include "Two Flags West," "September Affair," "Peking Express," "Touch of Evil." "The Last "Hush, Hush, Sweet "Oscar," "Petulia," "Tora! Tora! "Soylent "Caravans" and "Airport 77." In his later years, Cotten admitted to taking a casual attitude toward his work. "Pat (his wife) likes to say if I hadn't been pushed by Orson Welles and David Selznick and a few other gifted people, I'd have been quite happy as a non-actor, enjoying life as a gardener or a carpenter. I'm still State a relaxed Southerner at heart." Cotten was born May 15, 1905, in Petersburg, Va.

He was raised in a tight-knit family and heard stories about daring deeds during the Civil War and the sorrow that came with the Reconstruction. "In his 1987 autobiography, which he humorously subtitled "Vanity Will Get You Somewhere," Cotton wrote that he knew in high school that he wanted to be an actor. His father disapproved, but paid for his education at a drama school in Washington, D.C. The experience rid him of his southern accent and strengthened his desire to act. Failing to find acting jobs in New York, Cotten became an advertising salesman for The Miami Herald, organized an acting troupe at the University of Miami, and returned to New York in 1930.

He worked as assistant stage manager and understudy, then played leads in Boston. While appearing in "Paris Bound" on Broadway, he met the offstage pianist, Lenore Kip, and they married in 1931. Cotten became a lead actor in plays such as "The Postman Always Rings Twice" and "Accent on Youth." He joined Welles' Mercury Theater for "Julius Caesar," then two years later played opposite Katharine Hepburn on Broadway in "The Philadelphia Story." Following the death of his first na, beautiful halfwife tine 1960, Cotten en married MediSpanish actress, the same year. He credited her with his survival of the stroke: "I couldn't have done it without her." The couple lived in recent years in Palm Springs and moved back to Los Angeles last year, Robertson said. They appeared at a 1991 celebration for the 50th anniversary of "Citizen Kane," held on the Hollywood stage where the classic drama was filmed.

The couple had no children. Funeral services will be private, Robertson said. Playing in Peoria: High rate of births to unwed mothers PEORIA (AP) When 16-year-old Denise Lewis gave birth Aug. 2, she joined one of the largest populations of single, teen mothers in the nation. The baby's 18-year-old father is in jail and has no plans to marry Lewis, herself the daughter of a single mother.

"I'm not having any more," she said soon after the birth of her daughter, Dasia Shaquala LaShae Perry. "I don't want any more soon," she later added. "That's a blessing," said her mother, LaToya Harris. On hand for the birth was Denise's sister, 29-year-old Tonette Lewis, who herself has five children. The family typifies of the problem facing Peoria and the nation, according to a story in Sunday's editions of the Journal Star of Peoria.

yearlong study of the issue by the Journal Star revealed that single parents accounted for 48.7 percent of all babies born in Peoria in 1991. The national average was 29.5 percent. Some of teens see no way to change the trend. "There ain't nothing that can be done. People can't tell anyone not to have sex," Denise Lewis said.

But some people even refuse to recognize the issue. "It's not universally accepted that teen pregnancy is a problem," said Robert Murray, director of the Peoria City-County Health Department. It's a big problem to Suzanne Brasche, a social worker at Peoria's Methodist Medical Center. She sees new mothers so young and immature that they still enjoy coloring books and suck their thumbs as they recover from childbirth. Critics say community leaders have waited too long to respond.

"We've ignored this problem for so said Joyce Harant, executive director of the Planned Paren- Police Carbondale A television, video cassette recorder and video tapes were stolen from a residence in the 300 block of South Graham Street sometime Friday or Saturday. Divorce, substance abuse, domestic violence, sexual abuse and unemployment all are cited as contributing factors to the growing problems, experts said. "Teen pregnancy is a symptom of deeper socio-economic ills," said Bashir Ali, administrator of the Central Illinois Private Industry Council. "This problem is so large." For the past 10 years, unwed mothers in Peoria County have given birth at rates among the highest in Illinois, according to the state Public Health Department.

In 1992, Peoria County ranked fifth statewide in the percent of all births out-of-wedlock with 42 percent of all children born to single mothers. For teen births, Peoria County tied Cook County with 87.2 percent of all teen parents being unmarried. The highest rate was 89.9 percent in St. Clair County, among larger counties. Damage to the building was estimated at $1,500, and the loss placed at $2,790.
