ESG Reporting Done. What Next?With increasing risk of climate change, globally, the regulators insisted the companies to disclose their carbon footprints. In the similar line, SEBI in India also brought out mandatory ESG performance disclosure by top 1000 companies. I understand that most of those companies are disclosing their #ESG performance in India. However, the main question is- “Whether the #ESG performance disclosure is serving its purpose?” The answer is probably No. I believe the time has come when companies need to look beyond the ESG performance disclosure and act decisively on formulating climate action plan covering solid strategy to reduce carbon emission and protect the environment. For most of the companies the carbon emission under Scope 3 is more than 70% of the overall emission but limited disclosure is seen on that front because the effort requirement is relatively higher. Some measures which are low handing fruits and can be implemented easily are- (i) Use of Renewable Energy (especially solar) (ii) Use of Electric Vehicles especially where employee transportation is involved. These two measures can help reduce carbon emission in short term and make good impact because energy and transport account for more than 50% of carbon emission globally. Climate Action Plan should also be a part of ESG disclosure so that companies are under some pressure to take #climateaction as well. Looking beyond ESG disclosure is the key.
