Rhino's move in Tonga may pave room for Folau

Posted by NOOSHIE (HaynePlane12) on November 16, 2012 at 12:33am

INTEREST in Willie Tonga from English Super League premiers Leeds might help Parramatta to sign Israel Folau, with the Eels having been told to shed players to accommodate the returning AFL star under the salary cap for next season.Despite Parramatta's release of Tonga's brother Esi and Kiwi second-rower Justin Horo to Manly earlier this week, Fairfax Media understands that the club has only $110,000 left under the salary cap.The Eels are looking to find third-party deals for Folau, who was granted a release from his $1.5 million-per-season AFL contract two weeks ago, but NRL salary cap auditor Ian Schubert has ruled out allowing them to sign the 23-year-old for $110,000.AdvertisementFolau wants to play for Parramatta but the only way the club can fit him under the salary cap next season is if other players leave. Sources in England have said that Leeds are keen to sign Tonga.Rhinos boss Garry Hetherington has said the club is on the hunt for a ''quality centre'' from the NRL and it is understood his focus is on Tonga, who has another year to run on his contract with the Eels. The 29-year-old former Queensland and Australian centre might consider the move if a long-term deal is offered. However, it is understood Parramatta officials will not ask any player to leave so they can accommodate Folau and hope to resolve the situation with the NRL.Parramatta chief executive Ken Edwards and recruitment manager Peter Nolan have discussed with Schubert and NRL interim chief executive Shane Mattiske how the club could add Folau to its roster, but new coach Ricky Stuart is frustrated by the delays.Because of Parramatta's salary cap issue, the Eels and Folau have not been able to negotiate a contract as they do not know how much the club can afford to pay him next season. With up to 20 players off contract at the end of next season, the club does not have any problems beyond 2013 but it is struggling to finalise a deal that is acceptable to the NRL.The case has echoes of the Greg Inglis saga two years ago after he was forced to leave Melbourne because of the club's salary cap scandal. However, the NRL refused to register his contract with Brisbane and South Sydney also went through weeks of protracted negotiations and were forced to release centre Beau Champion after Schubert ruled third-party payments had to come under the salary cap.At the time a disillusioned Inglis, who recently signed a $4million, five-year deal with the Rabbitohs, believed that the NRL did not want him and considered switching to AFL after meeting Essendon coach James Hird.Complicating the Folau case is that he was on huge money from the AFL to help promote Greater Western Sydney Giants, but would not command the same value in the NRL as he has not played league for two years. However, his signing with the Eels would still be a marketing coup for the NRL in the battle between the codes for western Sydney and has already helped Parramatta to sell memberships.

What do you mean the Sharks? Until recently they were spending way below the salary cap and are now only catching up to spend the amount.

Throw in Hoppa next year on $700 and they say next year is not a problem.

      Me not adding this up.

With $110k only available this year & we have released Shacks, Horo, Esi, Poorewith Burt, Mcquire & Nathan retired

      Something is just not right

      Did we purchase

      - Ken Edwards $300k

      - Lussick $400k

      - Kelly $250k

      - Harrisson $250k

      - Ma'Afu $250k

or something to that effect to only have $110k left in 2012.

This is just wrong, wrong & more wrong on all levels.

What is our admin doing. This is not a Schubert /NRL issue it is all Parra / Spags & Co.

      Ken Edwards 300k ??????????

      • Active > Snakey - Sack Dylan Brown November 16, 2012 at 1:52am

Thats my point snake. He must be on that if we only have $110k.

He is probably only on a 2nd tier pay packet.

I'm pretty sure the CEO isn't included in the Salary cap, only the Top 25 players are. You forgot to remember we let go of Atkins and Jonny Mannah as they were in this season's Top 25. We should be plenty under the cap but we may have some back-ended contracts such as Tonga's.

        • 1Eyed Eel > SuperEel 22 November 16, 2012 at 2:06am

Lol, if our CEO was on the cap we'd be monumentally screwed!

        • chips dangerously > SuperEel 22 November 16, 2012 at 1:23pm

and why does everyone seem to forget young troy savage on 55k was also in our top 25 even though he didnt play a game of 1st grade.

    • chips dangerously November 16, 2012 at 1:33am

so how on earth could we have made a play for Hock, Lewis, T-rex, beau scott etc. etc. with 110 grand????

How the f.... did Sharks buy gordon, lewis, johnathan wright [whose now been in a gf], carney, ryan, heightington and only lose jeremy smith?

souths inglis last year and te'o lima another burgess this yr and not lose anyone

bulldogs havent lost anyone of significance and have signed t-rex to 600 grand inu perett.

titans signed taylor after huge spending spree last season in getting idris champion myles douglas etc.

Parra 2012 - LOSE 12 of there squad for 2013 including the sizeable contracts of Hindy Burt Shacks Poore and even Horo may have been on 200k.....plus mcguire atkins savage esi tonga penese john mannah. Now thats 12 players out of there top 25 squad from this year. Only players like mannah, savage or penese were on min. contracts u would think out of this list.

THE MATH DOESNT ADD UP AT ALL. i can only concede that Sandow may actually be on around 700k, same with Hayne. moi moi must be on 350k. we just dont have the bloody cattle ro rep players to be anywhere close to the cap after losing all those players!!! Is Lussick on 400k next year???

MY conclusion is Schubert is a f.....tard whose always had it in for Parra. We need an unbiased auditor unafiliated with clubs, not ex-players with hidden agendas against clubs they disliked as players.

Proof? Schuberts former club Rorters somehow can fit $1 million man SBW, james maloney, oldfield the manly winger, yet only lose Anasta. This is also proof why the Hock deal has fallen through.
