Summary
The Cardiology Medical Instrument Technician (MIT) at the Clement J. Zablocki Veterans Affairs Medical Center, is part of the Medical Division Cardiac Catheterization, Electrophysiology Labs (CCL/EPL). The primary purpose of this position is to provide support for a variety of highly technical invasive and non-invasive cardiac procedures with a special assignment to serve as the EKG MUSE Administrator

Duties
- Principle duties will entail all phases of the CCL/EPL procedure to include patient preparation, intra procedure monitoring, scrubbing and/or circulating, and post procedural activities as assigned by the Program Manger.
- Maintains knowledge of the more complex procedures. Complete both diagnostic and interventional invasive cardiac procedures including: LHC, RHC, PTCAs, Stent placement, IABP, Impella, IVUS, pressure wires, pericardiocentesis, temporary pacemakers, radial artery procedures, peripheral procedures, electrophysiology studies/procedures, implantable device placements and AICD placement.
- Assist the physicians and nursing staff in the CCL/EPL with venous and arterial sheath removal post-procedure using manual or mechanical compression and management of the procedure site which includes hemostasis, transradial (TR) band and femoral device application, identification and monitoring of hematomas, palpate/assess distal pulses, and documentation.
- Ability to plan and assist in the establishment of a completely integrated treatment and procedure program.
- Operate equipment on the most complex examination and treatment procedures for critically ill patients.
- Exhibit expert specialist skills during procedures such as evidence-based practice scrub techniques, circulating duties during procedures, hemodynamic and EKG monitoring, and operating varied equipment for diagnostic and interventional examination and treatment procedures including intra-aortic balloon pump therapy for critically ill patients.
- Assist with training and mentoring other technicians, nurses, nursing students, and cardiology fellows
- Ability to evaluate new products and equipment and make recommendations concerning developments which would improve operations.
- Maintain Technical Section competencies on Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) and other Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for all users.
- Exhibit exceptional collaboration and liaison skills with interdisciplinary team members.
- Coordination with Biomedical Engineering on the creation and maintenance of an EKG cart location table with mutually agreed-upon naming conventions.
- Confirmation of patient demographic errors on EKG tracing sent to the EKG image management system, which may be common and correction as needed.
- Routing of EKG studies to Cardiologist physician in-baskets.
- Input in collaboration WITH Biomedical engineer new Cardiologist physicians users into the EKG image management system and inactivate old users as they enter/leave the department.
- Perform initial set up of Cardiologist physician user profiles in the EKG image management system.
- On a weekly basis, verify the workflow configuration on the EKG image management system including management of location ranges for users profiles, configuration of physicians in baskets, and oversight of filters applied to the system.
- Daily, run database reports on the EKG image management system to query for unread/unconfirmed EKG tracing, mismatched EKG tracings, or other failures to properly route EKG tracing for physician over-read.
Work Schedule: M-F Day shift with variable start times and some on-call responsibilities during off-tours, holidays, and weekends

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- English Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C 7402(d)
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, applicants must meet the following grade requirements.
GS-9 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-8), which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of cardiac catheterization technician services. This includes: scrubbing, circulating, operating equipment, etc., on the most complex examination and treatment procedures including procedures such as endocardial biopsy, radio frequency ablation procedures, and intra-aortic balloon pump therapy for very critical patients. Preparing cardiac medications as directed by the attending physician. Mentoring and training lower graded technicians, nurses, nursing students, and cardiopulmonary technology students on cardiac catheterization laboratory procedures and assisting the supervisor/manager with quality control and performance improvement activities.
1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols, that pertain to the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory.
2. Knowledge of Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.
3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
4. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.
PREFERRED
Certification. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) as a registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) is highly desirable.
Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable for employees at this level.
