One of the most recognizable and polarizing figures in tennis history, John McEnroe made an indelible mark on his home country's Grand Slam tournament, beginning with a fourth-round run in 1977 and ending with a runner-up finish at age 39. In this article, I will take an in-depth look at what McEnroe did right there: his style of play and some of the results thatlabelled him the best male grass-court player ever.
Total performance by McEnroe at the US Open
John McEnroe's US Open record is beyond compare. He is a four-time singles champion at this illustrious event during his career, which would affirm him as one of the greatest to grace the US Open courts. He was also victorious in 1979, '80, and '81 before completing his four-timer with a dominant win early in that decade.
Aside from his titles, McEnroe also finished six times as runner-up, including four other Wimbledon (1982 to 85 and 1988).McEnroe's career aggregate in singles competition at the US Open was 65-10, which is very impressive, to say the least. Those 26 wins and four defeats have created a win-loss record of 86.67%, by some distance the strongest winning percentage at Flushing Meadows in that period.
McEnroe US Open Title Runs Breakdown
1979: McEnroe's Breakthrough
John McEnroe was 20 when he won his first US Open in 1979, opening the floodgates on Grand Slam titles. In the final, he defeated fellow American Vitas Gerulaitis 7-5, 6-3, 6 -3. The significance of his victory was compounded because he became the youngest male singles champion at the US Open since 1948.
1980: Defending the Crown
He successfully came back and defended his title in 1980. This was possible because, with a player out to hunt him down like a sacrificial lamb, McEnroe handled all the pressure of putting up yet another perfect record as the current champion. He played a hotly anticipated final against his great rival Björn Borg. McEnroe eventually won 7-6, 6-1, 6-7, 5-7, and in the fifth set of that match, McEnroe was mentally stronger than any other player ever played at this level.
1981: Cementing His Dominance
John McEnroe's three-peat in the 1981 US Open was a surprisingly easy triumph and underscored his rule over men's tennis. In the final, he once again faced Björn Borg and came out victorious (4-6, 6-2, 7-5, 8-3). For McEnroe, who had earlier in the year won his first title at Wimbledon against Borg as well to complete the double, it was a particularly sweet victory.
The Peak Of McEnroe's Powers: 1984
McEnroe's best season, 1984, was the year of his fourth and final US Open title. The triumph was one aspect of McEnroe's 1984 season: he went an incredible 82-3 and claimed victories at Wimbledon and the US Open.
America's Dominance Begins To Take Hold
McEnroe's performances at the US Open helped America retain its national men's tennis preeminence between 1982 and 1984. His triumphs and those of other Americans, such as Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras, created a golden age for US men's tennis.
Rivalry with Björn Borg
McEnroe's U.S. Open battles against Björn Borg, particularly his 1980 and '81 triumphs over the legendary Swede in Flushing Meadows finals, became central events played out during one of pro tennis' most riveting rivalries. They served as a reminder of what McEnroe was capable of in the most high-pressure scenarios against his toughest competitors.
Versatility Across Surfaces
McEnroe also showed adaptability on various surfaces by winning Wimbledon and the US Open multiple times, both on hard courts. This triumph convinced us of his all-court dominance.
Legacy in American Tennis
McEnroe is tied with Roger Federer and Jimmy Connors for the most men's singles titles won in US Open history, with four each. Securing this accomplishment certainly enters him into the pantheon of all-time US Open greats and might set aside a certain room for American tennis immortality.
His four titles won with a devilish mix of tactical acumen, peerless finesse at the net, and unshakable steel in the challenges plant him amongthe sport's greatest titans. For that reason, his displays at the US Open were considered career-defining and pivotal in shaping an era of American dominance. Some of his all-time classic encounters against rivals like Björn Borg and Jimmy Connors on the hardcourts in New York rank among the most memorable moments in tennis history.
Today, we remember John McEnroe's US Open legacy not just in terms of wins and losses but also as the story of a man who was so representative of his era in tennis that decades later, it remains difficult to talk about one without discussing the other. Those four US Open titles are his enduring legacy, the foundation of a career that has seen him ranked among the very best to have ever played tennis.
