Transcription Assignment (Create a unique title)

PLEASE NOTE: For this assignment, you will need to have access to a recording device. Most phones and computers have this function. You can also film the interview and use the audio. Do not purchase any equipment for this project. You may need to borrow a phone with these capabilities for a couple of hours. Please speak to me if you are having any issues accessing equipment.

PART 1 Interview and Transcribe

  1. Interview a person you know about ONE MOMENT in their life. Record the story. Minimum 5 minutes -maximum 10 minutes.

a) Remind them that it only has to be a short story and try to get them to focus on a specific event.

Examples: leaving or returning home, a memorable or childhood event, a time they learned something important, an event that changed them.

b) Before they start talking ask them to use as much detail as they can recall.

You can follow up with questions if you need to: How did things look, taste, smell, feel?

2. Use the recording to transcribe (type up), as closely as possible, the recording. Do not correct their speech or grammar. Do not correct their words. Just transcribe the words as closely as you can.

PART 2 Outline, Summary and Paraphrase

1. Write an outline of the story. Divide the story into smaller events or ideas. Number them and use the alphabet to separate them into sub-points.


2. Use the outline to paraphrase the interview.

According to the Purdue Online Writing Lab, a paraphrase is “your own rendition of essential information and ideas expressed by someone else, presented in a new form.” Check Online Writing Lab or OWL https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/619/1/

3. Use the paraphrase to summarize your interview. A summary is “ [less] detailed and focuses concisely on a single main idea.”

PART 3 Analysis

  1. Imagery (Sensory description: smell, taste, sound, touch, sight):

What kind of imagery did the teller use?

What did their imagery communicate?

2. Theme:

Did you notice any themes or ideas that came forward during the telling of the story?

Did the speaker repeat a particular word (not um or uh) or idea in the telling?

Explain what you thought was the most important idea shared in this story.

3. Epiphany:

Did the reader have an an epiphany in the course of the narrative (a sudden realization)?

YES: Describe the epiphany that your speaker experienced.

Was this the same epiphany that you would have had or would yours have been different?

NO: What kind of epiphany did you as a listener have from hearing this narrative?

Is there more than one kind of epiphany that could be had from this experience?

4. Irony:

Did the story contain irony? Describe the irony. Did you see or understand something from the story that your speaker may not have understood?

5. Tone:

What did you notice about the way the speaker told the story.How did they feel about the story? Proud, shy, worried, embarrassed or….what else?

What words did they choose that indicated how they felt about the incident? Does their language support or contradict what you heard in their voice?

6. Reflection: (This information would work well in your PART 4 ESSAY conclusion.)

a. Tell what it was like for you to transcribe the story.

b. What were you thinking when you were interviewing them?

c. What did you expect before the interview?

d. Did you see them differently after the interview?

e. What is the central meaning of the story to you?

f. Was the meaning for you different from what it meant to them?

g. What VALUES does it communicate in its telling?

h. What is most important idea for readers to understand about the story and what it represents about the teller?

i. What does this person represent in your life? What does this person represent in the world?

PART 4 Essay

Convert your notes into an analysis essay of your interview using

1) INTRODUCTION : summarize and/or paraphrase of the story

2) BODY :

CHOOSE 3 or 4 specific points about the important literary elements of the story

Literary elements: irony, theme, epiphany, tone, imagery

Create body paragraphs

POINT : First literary element

ILLUSTRATION: Show their use of these elements using specific quotes from your interview

EXPLAIN: Explain how your illustration connect to the literary element AND explain how these elements help you understand the meaning of the story

3) CONCLUSION: Use elements of your reflection questions to reflect on the central values expressed by the speaker

WHAT I WILL BE LOOKING FOR WHEN I READ

1. Your essay should impress your audience that you have strong analytical skills and can use specific details and quotes to back up your ideas.

2.Organize your essay in paragraphs with strong topic sentences. Each paragraph should focus on one point. The rest of the paragraph should develop and illustrate the topic sentence.

3.Your essay should be at least 1000 words. Short papers will receive a grade of D or F for not meeting the bare minimum.

EACH SECTION OF THIS PROJECT WILL HAVE A DUE DATE ON TURNITIN. FOR THE FINAL SUBMISSION, EVERY SECTION WILL BE COMPILED INTO ONE DOCUMENT AND SUBMITTED TO TURNITIN AS THE FINAL PROJECT.

EXTRA CREDIT: CREATE A PREZI AND CONVERT YOUR PROJECT INTO A PRESENTATION WITH YOUR INTERVIEW AS THE AUDIO COMPONENT.
