This presentation will focus on racial disparities in eating disorder care in two ways. First, an overview of societal racial barriers to mental health and ED treatments and recommendations on how to challenge these barriers will be addressed. Then, clinical outcomes data of clients in eating disorder treatment who identify as BIPOC (defined as Black or African American, Native American, Alaskan Native, Pacific Islander, Native Hawaiian) will be examined.

This process has sparked a realization in many that in order to progress we must embrace the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in all aspects of our work and lives. Integrating DEI values into clinical practice can be particularly difficult given its broad scope and complexities. These include issues of structural racism, health disparities, implicit bias, racial trauma, sexism and microaggressions, all of which can serve as mediating factors in the development and perpetuation of eating disorders (EDs) in the BIPOC community.

Studies have shown that the BIPOC community has higher rates of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) compared to whites. Although EDs frequently co-occur with PTSD, little is known about the intersection of eating disorders and PTSD among BIPOC clients. This presentation will reveal new data on treatment outcomes among BIPOC eating disorder clients with and without PTSD. The data shows that BIPOC adult and adolescent clients admitted to higher levels of ED care had higher rates of PTSD compared to white ED clients. All groups significantly improved in ED and PTSD measures at discharge from ED treatment. About the speakers

Adrienne Adams, MD, MS, is a psychiatrist who is Board Certified in child, adolescent, general psychiatry, and addiction medicine. She is currently the medical director for Rosecrance Griffin Williamson, a residential facility for adolescents and adults with co-occurring substance use disorders and mental health, Associate Professor-Adjunct Rush University Medical Center and Clinical Associate Professor- at UIC and Rockford. Dr. Adams has been involved with the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP), American Medical Association (AMA), and American Psychiatric Association (APA), American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training (AADPRT), and American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). A Distinguished Fellow in AACAP (2019) and in APA (2021) and inducted in the American College of Psychiatrists Honorary Society in 2023. She is enthusiastic regarding justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion issues and has held DEI roles within organizations including AADPRT, Illinois Psychiatric Society (IPS), and Illinois Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ICCAP). She is the proud mom of 2 teens and a fur baby, as well as wife of 20 years.

Molly M. Perlman, MD, MPH, CEDS, FAPA, is Chief Medical Officer of Monte Nido, overseeing psychiatric and medical care at over 50 facilities across the nation. Dr. Perlman is on the Board of Directors of the Eating Disorders Coalition (EDC), the eating disorder field’s national advocacy organization, served as Vice President of the EDC Board from 2018 through 2022, and advocates on Capitol Hill regularly for increasing eating disorder education and access to treatment.
